Song in my Head

Some CDs (we USED to call them albums) have one or 2 tunes I really like (Indigo Girls I'm looking at YOU), but there are only a few I can listen to all the way through without having to skip a song or two (or 7).

This song is running around in my head this morning. It's from this album, which is now eleven years old.

We listened and listened to this CD the summer before our first child was born, and I think I could still sing along with almost all the tunes. IMHO, it's very nearly a perfect album.

Other very nearly perfect albums, as far as I'm concerned are Paul Simon's "Graceland," Nancy Griffiths "Other Rooms, Other Voices," Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and the Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense," to name a few. I still remember almost all the words to almost all THOSE songs on all those albums as well, and sing along unabashedly whenever they're on.

Because this is a Shortie Mc Short Short post today (because the work, she is trying to murder me lately), I'll close by asking you:

What are YOUR very nearly perfect albums of all time?

I gotta go to the WayBack Machine ('cuz I'm so frggin' old), but Crosby, Stills, and Nash's first (self-titled) comes to mind. Carole King's "Tapestry", James Taylor's "Sweet Baby Jane", and almost anything with John Lennon on it.

Rick - Hey, I hear ya, I'm rowing the same (or at the very least, really similar) boat. Love your picks too.

Kapgar - yowza, I feel old, old, old. I only know a few of these. Dayum. Yeah - go ahead and steal to your heart's content; I like to share the love, man. Question fo you - why Kermit?

I'm going old-time here too, but the first one that immediately popped into my head when I read the question was "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac. I wore out my first vinyl copy of that album.

Some others that come to mind that I consider pretty much flawless albums - "Moondance" (Van Morrison), "Hi InFidelity" (REO Speedwagon), "Fly" (Dixie Chicks).

I'm sure there are more, but that's what I thought of without going in the other room to look at titles.

Some of these are repeats, but here goes:

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Carole King - Tapestry
Jayhawks - Tomorrow the Green Grass
BoDeans - Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams

That's it, for now. I'm sure I'll be kicking myself later for forgetting an important one.

DebR - oh yes, the Moondance. Loves it!

WN - I have not heard the last 2. What rock do I live under???

For some crazy reason, if I was stranded on a desert island was allowed only one CD, it just might be the soundtrack album to "Run Lolo Run."

Run LOLA Run.

Rick - you can forget Rumours if you want. It's OK. We still ove you here. :>

Trina - OK - you're now my music maven....because, guess what - I have no clue about any of these except DMB. Daggone it.

Mr S, Mr S - Can you hum a few bars? And what else? C'mon, date yourself just like everybody else here has.

I would probably have to choose

Indigo Girls-Swamp Ophelia/Nomads, Indians and Saints/Strange Fire

The Cure/Disintegration

Suicidal Tendencies/Suicidal Tendencies

John Denver/I want to Live

Concrete Blonde/Bloodletting. Walking in London, Mexican Moon

Beastie Boys/Licensed to Ill

and, for Kicks 'n'Giggles, Shock Therapy/Cancer

Hey, you asked.

Renn - next time we do lunch, YOU DRIVE while I listen. Cripes, I'm feeling out of touch here!

I could go on and on...but if I had to really boil things down, I'd say Led Zeppelin IV...but man, there are so many others!!! Lately I've been very much into Radiohead; but my taste also ranges from Willie Nelson to the Go-Gos. My music changes with my moods, I guess. :) Tough challenge!

Jess - ecelctic is good, but hoo, trying to ID those absolute "must" albums is almost impossible. I FEEL yo pain.

Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes. It NEVER gets old to me, although of course, there is ONE song I routinely skip. (Let's face it, an a cappella ditty about rape just isn't regular-listening fodder.)

I haven't listened to John Prine in years. Thanks for reminding me of him. :) Other Voices, Other Rooms IS a nice collection, too.

Ok wait -- two more!!!
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting
The Breeders - Last Splash

Beatles - Abbey Road
Beatles - Sgt Pepper
Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales

There are many, many, many others I adore, but these are the only ones I would call perfect.

Wen - that settles it. Next time I'm in NoVa I'm coming to YOUR house and we're ataying up really late and singing into hairbrushes while playing John Prine. It's the only way to really get the Prinal swerve on. :> (Words Rock can sing along too if she's so inclined).

WN - what's all this with the splashing of the blood? You're scaring me!

KingF - Intersting. I had left the Beatles off my list entirely, and should be ashamed. They were my first band-y love, after all.

TL - You are a pup compared with me. I must commend you on the selections - well done, and more for my list of things to either dig out of the CD box or go purchase.
